Greek terrorism and the Balkans
The Balkans dimension is also complemented
by linking organised crime and international
terrorism. The attack at the U.S. Embassy on
January 12, 2007 was connected by the Greek
media and the Police with the introduction of
rockets from the border regions between Kosovo
and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
The attack at the Police Station of Aghia
Paraskevi – a suburb in Athens – in November
2009 where three officers were seriously
wounded by terrorists with Kalashnikovs and
dozens of other attacks from 2004 onwards,
refer to the import of weapons, expertise and
training from the Balkans to Greek terrorists.
It is interesting to note that the attacks by
explosives of Semtex type both in Madrid 2004
and London in 2005 have been associated by
many with smuggling rings that sold these
materials from Bosnia and Kosovo, respectively.
In Greece the use of ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate
Fuel Oil) type explosives from the terrorist
group “Revolutionary Struggle”, is very likely to
be associated with the illegal importation of
this explosive by “shadow companies” located in
Balkan countries. This particular terrorist group
has already made several detonations using
this type of explosive, consuming so far more
than 120 kilos of it. In one case, an elaborated
technique was used for the first time in Greece
that according to local experts pointed out
towards military-style specialization that can
be offered by mercenaries or former officers
that sell their services to the highest bidder.
Although this is purely an assumption, it seems
rather logical that the Greek terrorists were
able to acquire links with Balkan crime groups
in order to get the ammunition needed and also
to import much-needed know how for them.
Since the Yugoslav war era, there are plenty of
ex-combatants specialised in explosives in the
Balkans and that is also another element that
is frequently discussed in security circles in
Greece, when dealing with domestic extremismterrorism.
In April 2009, the then sub-Minister of the
Greek Public Order Ministry, Mr. Markoyannakis,
and an experienced ex-attorney general,
concluded in a widely–circulated interview, that
“organised crime and terrorism in Greece have
common channels of collaboration relating
to arms trafficking”. The current Minister, Mr.
Chryssohoidis, who under his command the
terrorist group “November 17th“ was disbanded
in 2002, has recently stated that “organised
crime and terrorism in Greece are directly
related….unregistered amounts of capital from
organised crime proceedings fuel terrorist
activity in the country”.
The association of terrorism with the Balkans
has other aspects that need to show to give a
clearer picture.
In September 2006, the Pakistani citizen Arfan
Qadeer Bhatti was arrested in Oslo, Norway
when attempting to blow up the embassies of
the United States and Israel. He used Kosovo
territory as an intermediate station between
Pakistan and Norway and was an associate
of the Albanian leader of organised crime in
Pristina, Princ Dobrosi.
The American expert analyst for terrorism in
the Balkans, Christopher Deliso, has recorded
in his book: “The coming Balkan Caliphate” that
the NATO-led forces in Afghanistan in recent
years have discovered caches in mountain
caves where the Taliban hid heroin, along with
satellite phones which had made calls to phones
in locations in the Balkans.
Finally the Israeli and American world-renowned
researcher on issues of extremism, Michel
Chossudovsky, points out that only the so-called
gang “Drenica”, that belongs to the same “Fis”
as the Premier of Kosovo, Thachi, is responsible
for 10-15% of total organised criminal activity in
Kosovo.
Reports of the German intelligence service that
was “leaked” in 2007-08, leads to the same
conclusion and along the same lines, similar
findings can be found by recent reportages by
Der Spiegel, BBC, Washington Times, Le Monde
Diplomatique and others.
As far as the Greek media are concerned, there
are frequent and detailed analyses on the
subject, mainly by specialized editions that
have made considerable revelations and point
out that a significant percentage of organised
crime activity in the country is directly related
to the empowerment of those groups, mostly in
Albania, Kosovo and the Balkans in general.
