NEW YORK—The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) distributes below reports that document Turkish Cypriot responsibility for the Crimes Against Humanity perpetrated during the Turkish Invasions of 1974. The reports titled “The Palekythro massacre: more victims are buried” and “The missing from the village of Strongylos” have been compiled by London-based Greek-Cypriot blogger Hellenic Antidote, based on reports in the Cyprus media, in print and TV. We also include a letter from Greek-Cypriot writer, Fanoulla Argyrou documenting Turkish Cypriot atrocities in collaboration with English and Turkish security forces many years before the Turkish invasions of 1974.
After the Turkish invasions of 1974, the Greek political establishment has kept an official “silence” on the crimes committed by Turkish Cypriots, and not only by the Turkish invasion forces. The time has come to bring these Turkish Cypriot murderers to justice wherever they may presently reside. There is no statute of limitations for Crimes Against Humanity.

The Palekythro massacre: more victims are buried
Hellenic Antidote blog, Monday, 9 March 2009
Above is a news item that appeared on Cyprus TV on Friday regarding the Palekythro massacre, which I’ve written about previously here. The murderers were three Turkish Cypriot teenagers from the neighbouring Turkish village of Epiho, who took advantage of the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on 14 August 1974 to descend on Palekythro first to steal livestock and farming machinery from Greek villagers before returning the next day to round up the elderly and the women and children, who were then systematically killed.

The missing from the village of Strongylos
Hellenic Antidote blog, Monday, 2 March 2009
Regarding the 1,619 Greek and Greek Cypriot missing since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, it’s often said that this is a purely humanitarian issue that must be resolved to ease the pain of the families who have had to endure decades of not knowing the fate of their loved ones.
That the issue of the missing persons has a humanitarian aspect is undoubtedly true, but what is not true is that the massacre of prisoners of war and civilians – men, women and children of all ages – has no legal or political ramifications. In fact, those who repeatedly declare that the missing persons issue is solely humanitarian do so in order to divest the murders of their political content – the Turkish ambition to partition Cyprus was predicated on the ethnic cleansing of Greeks – and as a ploy to absolve the murderers of their crimes.

The creation of the Republic of Cyprus was not achieved by the Turks – quite the opposite!
TA NEA, English Edition, London UK, January 2009
AN Early Day Motion [EDM 315] on the death of former President of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos was tabled on 16/12/08 in the House of Commons by Andrew Dismore and 7 other MPs. The motion caused a furor in the Greek Community, as it falsely claims that the Turkish Cypriots were the other part that created the Republic of Cyprus and freed Cyprus from British colonial rule. This is far from the truth, as we all know, because the Turks worked for the colonial forces to suppress the struggle for Independence.
EDM 315 states:
“That this House joins the people of Cyprus, his wife Fotini, his family, friends and colleagues in mourning the passing of the former President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, who died on 12 December 2008, of lung cancer; recalls that he served as the Fifth President of the Republic of Cyprus from February 2003 to February 2008, during which time he oversaw Cyprus’ entry to the European Union on 1 May 2004 and on 1 January 2008 the adoption of the euro currency; recalls also his long public service from being Makarios’ first Interior Minister, through his leadership of the DIKO party, and his successful legal practice; agrees with President of the Republic Demetris Christofias that he was a politician with depth and was widely respected by Cypriot society which respects patriots who conscientiously serve it; and recognises a leader who never wavered from taking a stand against prevailing public and political opinion if he believed it served the island’s best interests, and who always defended the creation of the Cyprus Republic as an achievement of both Greek and Turkish Cypriots after Britain’s colonial rule. “
OFFENDING AND INSULTING
The said EDM caused a flood of responses and many letters were sent to Mr Dismore. Here is one such letter by journalist Fanoula Argyrou.
Dear Mr. Dismore,
I refer to your EDM 315 and I would like to note that the wording of this text is grossly offending and insulting to the memory of President Tassos Papadopoulos and to the overwhelming majority of the Greek Cypriots
Late Tassos Papadopoulos was a genuine fighter for the freedom of our country and participated in the EOKA 1955-59 against the British colonialism for the Union of Cyprus with Greece. That aim was not allowed to be achieved by the then British governments and their pro-Turkish machinations…As a result they imposed on us the London and Zurich agreements. Tassos Papadopoulos was one of those few who OPPOSED the London and Zurich Agreements.
Tassos Papadopoulos participated in the EOKA 1955-59 TOGETHER next to the majority of the Greek Cypriots young and old, male and female but NOT A SINGLE TURKISH CYPRIOT participated in the EOKA 1955-59 struggle.
Instead, Sir Hugh Foot fought viciously the Greek Cypriots taking into his umbrella as collaborators the Turkish Cypriots and using them in the police, interrogations etc against the Greek Cypriots.
Instead, Sir Hugh Foot collaborated with Turkey in arming the Turkish Cypriots since 1957 and covered up Turkey’s strategy of creating Volgan and TMT who were killing not only Greek Cypriots but also their own people Turkish Cypriots, in order to create the separation of the two communities and to show to the outside world that they cannot live together so that they could put into action their partitionist policy. Hence the Kioneli massacre of Greek Cypriots in June 1958 when British officials lured 35 or so Greek Cypriots into a Turkish stronghold to be slaughtered. The report prepared at the time is profoundly condemning of the British officials and unreservedly underlines their guilt. That is why very few if any at all TMT members (headed by R. Denktash) ever got sentenced compared to the massive arrests, imprisonments, tortures and HANGINGS of the Greek Cypriots including a 17 year student Pallikarides who had done nothing!
Now to claim that “the creation of the Cyprus Republic as an achievement of both Greek and Turkish Cypriots after Britain’s colonial rule” is an unprecedented insult to the memory of a great man. Whom however, the British government (especially during Blair/Straw era) regarded almost as…hostile because he was great enough to call upon his people to reject the atrocious Annan Plan.
President Papadopoulos was great and will be remembered in history as such for his courage and determination not to allow the Republic of Cyprus to dissolve in order to satisfy Turkish aspirations and demands. Yet, you found not a single word to include in your EDM 315 regarding his BEST ACHIEVEMENT of all. For which he is overwhelmingly praised in ALL obituaries in Cyprus, Greece and all over the world (strangely enough except president Christofias who follows your line!) : His stance against that crime of the century which you supported – the Annan Plan.
At least, now that he is dead (albeit very much among us Greek Cypriots) you should treat the MAN with the respect he deserves and not with insults.
Thank you.
Fanoulla Argyrou
